January 20th CROMPTON TESTER IN LCB
KNOCKOUT The firsts have been drawn to play away against Crompton in
the first round of the 2009 LCB knockout. The Oldham based club play in the
Central Lancashire League and can boast Darren Sammy as a recent pro prior to
his 2007 mid season call up to the touring West Indies squad. They followed up
with Tino Best and their current professional is also
West Indian in Kevin Stoute. The second round would,
if successful, give the side a lucrative home tie against Morecambe or
neighbours Bury.

January 24th MAJOR UPGRADE FOR
CLUBHOUSE The clubhouse is about to undergo a big facelift with
re-decoration and new fixtures and fittings throughout. The upgrade is due to
take place in February.
February 8th TON UP SAJ PUTS ‘EM TO THE SWORD Professional Sajith Fernando is warming up nicely for the 2009 season in Egerton having smashed rivals Sinhalese Sports Club for 139 in 260 balls in their recent first class three day encounter. That performance put him top of the first class run scorers with 813 and his average of just over 50 places him 6th in the averages for batsmen who have ten or more innings.
March 7thALMOST THERE The clubhouse refurbishment which
has included a big facelift with re-decoration and new fixtures and fittings
throughout, is all but complete. The new carpet is due on Friday 6th
and all members, young and old, are invited to pop down on Saturday March 7th
to inspect the handiwork of the talented bunch of interior designers known as
“the few”.

March 8thRUN MACHINE Professional Saj Fernando’s 39th run in the recent Inter
Provincial Tournament won’t have raised too many eyebrows, but for the man himself
it was a bit special as it meant that he passed the remarkable personal
milestone of 10,000 first class runs. I know Saj
reads this, because he emailed to say so, so congratulations from everyone here
in shivering Egerton !
March 10thAGMThe Annual General Meeting took place on March 10th.
Mike Hall was elected Club Secretary, otherwise it’s “as you were”.

IN FINAL
Professional Saj Fernando’s date with Oldham
Professional Chinthaka Jayasinghe in the final of the Premier Limited Over Tournament in Sri Lanka, ended in
disappointment as the Tamil Union, despite wheeling out Mutiah
Murilitharan for a rare outing, were soundly beaten
by 115 runs. To add insult to injury, he fell to Jayasinghe’s
bowling for just 2. For a look at the scorecard, click here

March 24thPIGGY FROM THE PAST
The Bolton News gave
club members a blast from the past this week as they re-kindled memories of the
1974 ‘Turton Sports Council Senior Piggy Competition’
held at the club in August. Click on the picture for a larger version and see
how many you can name.
March 25th WILL MOVES UP A666 Astley Bridge all-rounder Will Halton
has pledged his 2009 season to Egerton. 1st XI manager Joe Hart says
he’s ‘really happy we’ve managed to get the right handed batsman and right arm off spinner’,
who is also a much respected coach.
March 30th JUNIORS RARING TO GO

is already under way. See Juniors page for details and

May 17th LEVER
SECOND BEST IN RUN SPREE
|
The firsts beat both
the weather and the opponents in Saturday’s league clash at Blackburn Road.
After a late start and then four rain interruptions in the first forty
minutes alone, the weather eventually subsided and the home team went to tea
with an imposing 249 on the board with Stuart Hornby
smashing 100+. Despite a reduced target, Lever were
never really in the hunt and finished on 180. C.L.L. side Crompton then
proved that they need some bowling coaching as the firsts beat them in the
almost inevitable ‘bowl out’ in the LCB knockout. With the game abandoned
with the home side on 70-3, Saj Fernando, Mat Cuff,
Will Halton hit the stumps in a 3-1 win setting up
a second round tie at Morecambe on June 7th. HERE

END OF SEASON MATCHES:
After beating the weather and the opposition, the comprehensive seven wicket
win over neighbours Eagley counted for nothing as Farnworth chased down 200 plus to beat Horwich
and nick the title at the death. After a week of transporting covers up and
down Blackburn Road in an attempt to beat the unseasonal September weather, it
seemed that the most exciting finish for years would culminate in the biggest
anti-climax for years as a deluge enveloped Bolton in mid-morning. The first
glimmer of hope came from TV pictures of a sun-drenched Goodison
Park and with the weather coming from the west, hopes were raised. So it proved
as the games got underway and, to be fair, Farnworth’s
run chase in a 37 over game on a soggy outfield was impressive. So a season of
seventeen wins and less defeats than the champions ends in disappointment, but
as Mike Hall rightly stated, “There’s always next year”.

DECEMBER
It was an
emotional time for 90 year old Dorothy Scott shortly after taking a tumble on
the 225 bus and being housebound for weeks, when this motley crew descended upon
her tiny living room to present her with the President’s Trophy for services to
the club. It was especially poignant as the trophy was dedicated to her late
husband Len, who was Life President up to his death in 2002.
The Lancashire Knockout draw for 2011 has dictated that we
will receive a visit from Droylsden CC of the
Saddleworth League. Droylsden finished in 5th place
in the Saddleworth League last season, after pipping
Shaw in the last game of the season. FULL DRAW HERE
