Born in Lepton near Huddersfield in 1870, Marsden Newhill was Egerton professional in the years 1891 to 1895 inclusive. He returned for another three year spell between 1902 and 1904 before playing as an amateur and then becoming captain in seasons 1915 and 1916. He won the club amateur batting prize in 1906, 1909 and 1912 (with a total of 209 runs at an average of 12.6 !) and the bowling prize in 1905, 1906, 1909, 1912, 1913 and 1915. Marsden’s scrapbook was discovered in Len Scott’s belongings after he passed away. In his own hand, he describes below, his first season at Egerton. He states:

“1891 – April 13th. Went to Egerton Nr Bolton – returned (to Huddersfield) Oct 21st /91. Average batting 28.15 Bowling 68 wkts for 7 per wicket. In this season was presented with a silver medal for best batting average by Thomas Ashton Esq.”

I wonder where that medal is now ??

And... Who was Thomas Ashton?

Allan Hartley small.jpgAllan Hartley

Professional 1923

Pic courtesy of Allan’s grandson who is researching his Grandfather’s career. Can anyone help?

The family moved to Egerton from Rugby in April 1923 and lived in Cis Hey Cottage which, Allan’s daughter in her diary described as “being about a mile from the village part way up Turton Heights, nestled into a bank?” I was apparently a former game-keeper’s lodge and stood alone with only a nearby farm for company. Anyone any clues where it is, or more likely was ?
